![Tempe Transportation Center](http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4046/4234519807_65aca300c2_m.jpg "The <a href=\"http://www.tempe.gov/greenprograms/transitcenter.htm\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tempe Transportation Center</a>, at 200 E. Fifth Street, is a multi-modal transit center, hosting the Bicycle Cellar, a secure bike station with showers, lockers, repair and rentals, as well as a stop on several bus routes. It also includes a light rail train station - ASU Sun Devil Stadium (originally known as Veterans Way and College Avenue).
The Tempe Transportation Center is seeking LEED Platinum (I just checked on the U.S. Green Building Council's website and so far, which doesn't yet list the building). The EPA gave the City of Tempe the Smart Growth Achievement Award on December 1, 2009 (<a href=\"http://www.tempe.gov/greenprograms/pdfs/EPASmartGrowthAward12.01.09.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\">see PDF</a>), "as a model of sustainable design."")
![What a new bike lane might look like](http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3460/3837552337_8061bf2236_m.jpg "When streets are resurfaced in Chicago, the Bicycle Program can sometimes "<a href=\"http://bike2015plan.org/mbac/june172009/handouts/gleason_onstreetbikeways.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\">piggyback</a>" (PDF) the project to get new or refreshed bike lane or marked shared lane pavement markings installed.
This is looking south on Clinton Street north of Fulton at the railroad tracks.
Come here in the morning or evening to see bike rush hour for all the Chicagoans traveling to Milwaukee Avenue.

![Electric car parking at Chicago Police station](http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2641/3998341984_0b428fe3db_m.jpg "All new public buildings in Chicago are supposed to achieve LEED certification. According to the U.S. Green Buildings Council (USGBC) <a href=\"http://www.usgbc.org/LEED/Project/CertifiedProjectList.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow\">website</a>, this police station achieved Gold.
These electric car parking spaces are <b>cheap points</b> in order to gain that that certification.
-The Chicago Police don't use electric cars
-These parking spaces are inconvenient to the popular or main entrances
-There area six of them -This space could have been put to better use, like a rain garden or break area
I wrote a little about cheap points <a href=\"http://www.stevevance.net/planning/2009/10/a-leed-related-homework-assignment-and-my-response/\" rel=\"nofollow\">on my blog</a>, and how the USGBC is upgrading their standards to make energy efficiency more important.
It does appear that the spaces have permeable pavers and there's a curb cut to allow water to flow from the drainage spout through the curb cut to the permeable surface before it reaches the drain in the alley. Good job on that. I ride by here twice a day and the only car I see parked here is a Toyota truck (not sure of its "hybridity," though).

The pedestrian path is cantilevered off the east side of the Lake Shore Drive bridge over the Chicago River and DuSable Harbor. It "broke" in September 2009 and a detour was made onto a travel lane.
The city installed metal plates over the open grates of the bridge deck, as well as a guardrail and reflective signs.")

I do not support the Chicago 2016 Olympics bid in its current form. It needs to be improved or ended.
I want to quote few sections of the bid book for you:
-all existing infrastructure and planned projects listed in 15.6.1 and 15.6.3 are guaranteed by the responsible agencies.
-No existing transport infrastructure requires permanent work.
What does this mean? No Olympic-specific projects are needed. Or, no infrastructure will be upgraded because of the Olympics, but because of annual maintenance and already planned capital projects.
Other inconclusive and confusing sections:
-There will be "access to the Federal Borrowed Bus Program, which will be used to augment Chicago's rolling stock during the Games."
Federal Borrowed Bus Program - wtf is that?
Table 15.11 shows the current totals of rolling stock broken down by transit agency and then by type. It then mentions how much each transit agency will have in 2016. It then mentions how much will be needed to supplement the current amount. The amount needed to supplement is 0. That would mean that all transit agencies will have all the rolling stock needed to 1) provide for their regular customers, and 2) provide rides for an additional 100,000 people riding at least twice per day (there and back). Also, some buses will serve shuttle duty to ferry passengers between the rail stations and the venues. This means that those spectators taking rail will demand 2-4 rides (2 if station is adjacent to venue, 3-4 if person has to take shuttle between station and venue).

Do you see what I'm getting at?
The plan needs some improvement. If the bid producers truly believe that the setup they describe (and I copied above) will work, then I would like to see the discussions, documentation, and calculations the bid producers undertook in collaboration with the transportation agencies in Chicago and Illinois.
Also, an analysis of the expected costs and benefits would be contributive.")
